A herd of bison which was introduced into the Augustów Primeval Forest in Podlasie in February has a new member – a newborn bison calf.
Establishment of a bison herd in the Augustów Forest is one of the elements of the “Comprehensive protection of the bison by the State Forests” program. The cost of the program is PLN 40 million. Ultimately, the Augustów herd is to breed about 50 animals.
At the beginning of 2018, the State Forests reported that there were 1,793 bison in Poland, 165 more than in the previous year and almost 1,200 more than in 1998. Poland has the largest bison population in the world.
