More supervision needed in defense projects – watchdog

The Ministry of Treasury and the Ministry of Defense should maintain better oversight over projects carried out for the Polish Defense Holding (previously Grupa Bumar), was the main conclusion of a report following an audit by the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). Several of the 15 projects currently being carried out have no recommendation from the Defense Ministry which will make the implementation of their results more difficult, if not impossible, the watchdog’s press officer said.

The audit also revealed a number of financial irregularities in the holding’s operations, including spending PLN 64 million earmarked for research projects on settling overdue tax payments, as well as paying out nearly PLN 2 million in severance packages to the holding’s employees who were later rehired by the group. NIK has submitted that all misappropriated funds should be paid back to the state budget.
