Two English teenagers have been detained after stealing several objects from the Museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
“This is a historic place. No objects can be removed under any circumstances, Every visitor is informed of this upon arrival” Pawel Sawicki, the museum’s media liaison told Rzeczpospolita.
Guards noticed the two boys, aged 17 and 18, removing artifacts from the “Canada” section, which was used as a storage facility for objects taken from Jews when they arrived at the camp. The objects stolen were fragments of glass, buttons, as well as as a spoon and a razor.
The detainees spent the night in jail and will be questioned and charged with stealing cultural artifacts. Punishment for such crimes may be as grave as 10 years in prison.
Last year, a German visitor was charged with stealing cutlery, porcelain and other objects from the museum. The objects were returned, and the man is awaiting trial.
