Professor Jeffrey Sachs, one of the most influential economists worldwide and the co-author of the Polish transformation, will be the guest speaker at this year’s European Forum for New Ideas. From 30 September to 2 October 2015, Sopot will host over 1100 prominent figures from the world of business, state administration. culture and science from Poland and abroad.
Sachs gained renown as an economic adviser to governments in Eastern Europe, ex-Soviet countries, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In Poland he is known above all as an economic adviser to ‘Solidarity’ and the author of the draft project of Polish economic transformation – the Balcerowicz Plan. The alterations proposed by Sachs at that time used to, and still do, evoke extreme emotions. What advice is he going to give to the Poles and other EFNI guests this time?
Outstanding minds at one place
As each year, EFNI organizers expect a lively exchange of thoughts thanks to the presence of big names of modern Europe and the world, including unquestionable authorities and influential politicians. Apart from Jeffrey Sachs, the Forum will welcome: Donald Tusk – President of the European Council, Elżbieta Bieńkowska – European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Maroš Šefčovič – Vice-President of the European Commission, European Commissioner for Energy Union, and Emma Marcegaglia – President of BUSINESSEUROPE. The areas of expertise of guests such as Luciano Floridi, Professor of Oxford Internet Institute, Lev Manovich, Director, Software Studies Initiative, USA, Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief, Russia in Global Affairs, Russia, Lutz Finger, Director of Data Science, LinkedIn, USA, Salvatore Babones, Professor of sociology, University of Sydney, and Olivier Roy, Professor, European University Institute in Florence, indicate that the fifth EFNI will be another unique intellectual challenge.
The discussions will centre on the necessary value shifts and priorities to be adopted by the West with a view to ‘re-ordering’ the world. The invited panellists together with EFNI attendees will search for answers to questions on how to repair capitalism and how to protect the world from growing social inequality, radicalism or geopolitical threats. The programme will also include discussions on the trends that influence the economy: sharing economy, sustainable development, philantrocapitalism and the concept of shared value. The programme will centre on the major EU challenges: the future of the eurozone, the Digital Single Market (DSM) or the European Energy Union.
Honorary patronage over the Forum was granted by President of the Republic of Poland and the European Parliament.
