Apple has pledged to grant access to its NFC technology on iOS devices to rival mobile wallet developers, following concerns raised by the European Commission (EC). Previously, only Apple Pay could use NFC for contactless payments on iPhones, which the EC argued stifled competition and innovation, violating Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).

In response, Apple will allow third-party mobile wallets to use NFC input and other industry-standard terminals for secure payments. Users will be able to set new payment apps as defaults and use authentication features like Touch ID and Face ID. Apple will also establish monitoring and dispute resolution systems to ensure compliance.

The EC has made these commitments legally binding for 10 years, enhancing competition and offering consumers more mobile payment options.
