On April 23, 2024, representatives of the European Commission conducted simultaneous inspections at the Chinese company Nuctech's offices in Warsaw and Rotterdam, seizing computer equipment and mobile phones. This action was carried out under Article 14 of EU Regulation 2022/2560, which allows unscheduled inspections and access to documents across the EU to investigate alleged subsidies from the Chinese government, which could constitute unfair competition. The move, largely unnoticed in Poland, gained significant attention on both sides of the Pacific and was condemned by Chinese officials.
Observers suggest the raid coincides with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to Beijing and could strain EU-China relations, raising concerns about a "creeping trade war."
