Demand for electricity growing in Europe
European electricity demand is rising again after falling about 9% over the 15 years through 2023. September 2026 marked the EU’s 13th consecutive month of y/y growth, the longest streak since at least 2018. Data centers, AI, electric vehicles, air conditioning, and broader electrification are driving demand despite weak industrial activity. BloombergNEF projects European data center capacity will exceed 30 GW by 2032 and reach about 39 GW in 2035. Meeting demand will require more renewable generation, expanded transmission networks, and better energy storage. Fuel-market disruptions and low gas inventories add price and supply risks.
If grid investment lags, rising demand could increase energy costs and weaken industrial competitiveness.
