Dom Turka Renovation in Augustów Named WAF 2025 Finalist

The renovated Dom Turka in Augustów has been shortlisted for the 2025 World Architecture Festival Awards in the “Culture” category. Designed by Polish studio Tremend, the project transformed a building once used for postwar political repression into a museum commemorating the victims of the 1945 Augustów Round-Up.
Originally a tenement house from around 1900, Dom Turka later served as a site of imprisonment and torture under NKVD and UB control. Its sensitive restoration preserves historical elements while incorporating modern exhibition space and accessibility features. The design also includes a symbolic memorial wall listing nearly 600 victims.
“The project creates a space for reflection while honoring both the past and the community’s memory,” the architects said.
This marks another success for Tremend at WAF, following wins in previous years. Dom Turka now stands alongside Warsaw’s Museum of Modern Art as one of two Polish finalists in the international competition.
