A massive 600-ton tunnel boring machine (TBM) from China has arrived in Poland to excavate the country’s longest railway tunnel, stretching 3.8 km between Męcina and Mordarka in Małopolska. Transported in 36 parts by 30 trucks, the TBM will first drill an evacuation tunnel before larger machinery arrives to construct the main tunnel.
Part of the Chabówka-Nowy Sącz railway modernization, this project aims to improve travel times across the region, with the tunnel expected to be completed by 2027. The total investment, including further railway expansions, will cost PLN 7 billion, creating new electrified lines, bridges, and tunnels to link Kraków, Zakopane, and Nowy Sącz by 2030.
