European cars and car parts challenged by Chinese imports
The EU and China agreed to limit Chinese hybrid imports to an initial 350,000 vehicles a year, with the quota rising 6% y/y. Chinese automakers have expanded rapidly in Europe: their share of the conventional hybrid market reached 14% in the first half of 2026, while their plug-in hybrid share hit 25%. But the bigger challenge is the supply chain. EU imports of Chinese auto parts climbed 23% y/y to EUR 5 bln in the first half, while European parts exports to China fell, turning a trade surplus into a deficit.
The European Commission’s proposed “Made in EU” rules would require 70% of components, excluding batteries, to come from the EU for certain public support. Parts makers announced 18,900 job cuts in early 2026.
