European electricity prices surge as winter begins
European wholesale electricity prices climbed sharply in October. The average spot price reached EUR 175.37 per MWh, up 20.6% m/m and 70% from July. The 2027 annual forward contract averaged EUR 135.58 per MWh, a 14.4% m/m increase. Energy Solution expects upward pressure to persist as winter starts, solar generation declines, fossil fuel use increases, and cooler forecasts boost heating demand.
In Poland, prices remained below the European average, but limited availability at conventional power plants could make spot prices above PLN 1,000 per MWh more frequent during peak demand. Since July, the 2027 contract rose 23% in Poland, compared with 65% in Germany and 107% in France.
