European industry under threat by China, may lose 300,000 jobs by end of year
European industry could lose around 300,000 jobs by the end of 2026 if the EU fails to curb the replacement of European suppliers by Chinese manufacturers, according to steel distributor association Eurometal. The group warns that China is moving deeper into European supply chains by selling finished components, threatening production, investment, jobs, and industrial know-how. Metal industry representatives are protesting in Brussels with symbolic coffins highlighting risks to EU competitiveness and factories.
Eurometal argues that European producers face carbon costs and steel import tariffs that Chinese components often avoid. The EU has already imposed higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and steel, while officials warn that the EU-China trade imbalance, around EUR 360 bln annually, is unsustainable.
