Europeans thinking about the future of continent, but Poles not invited
Mario Draghi’s new Rhine Group, created to develop proposals to improve Europe’s competitiveness, has drawn criticism for excluding Poland and including only one representative from Central and Eastern Europe. The group brings together more than 50 politicians, economists, business leaders and academics. Marcin Piątkowski of Kozminski University argues that the omission reflects Western Europe’s failure to recognize Poland’s economic success, which he says cannot be explained mainly by EU funding. Piotr Sankowski of IDEAS also criticized the lack of regional representation.
The group says “logistical problems” limited its initial membership and plans to expand. Its broader mission is to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness amid technological weakness, rising global competition and growing geopolitical pressure.
