Regardless of whether the challenge we are facing is flying to the moon, fighting a pandemic or protecting the climate, adequate financing is necessary to achieve this goal. The problem, however, is that the financial system that should have provided them for decades, according to Mazzucato, is focused largely on financing itself.

In her opinion, we are currently dealing with the phenomenon of "ultra-financialization" of the global economy, which leads to similar crisis-causing pathologies.

In her opinion, this phenomenon also occurs in business. According to Mazzucato, between 2008 and 2017, the 500 largest American companies spent a total of $ 4 trillion just on redeeming their own shares from investors.

According to the American-Italian economist, it is also wrong to believe that states were to be "crammed" into the doctrine of neoliberalism prevailing for several decades - that their role should be limited to "correctors" of market flaws and institutions limiting risks for some market participants, such as entrepreneurs.
