Former Benefia chiefs jailed

Former Benefia Life Insurance executives have been sentenced for massive investment losses tied to Progres Investment (PI), a defunct NewConnect-listed firm. Between 2010 and 2012, Benefia, then part of Vienna Insurance Group (VIG), lost around PLN 160 million in risky, unjustified transactions. The Warsaw District Court sentenced ex-CEO Tomasz T. to nine years, Przemysław M. to six years, and Anna B. to two years in prison; Krzysztof K. was acquitted. The ruling is not final.
Tomasz T., also convicted in a related PI case, has lived in the UAE for years and skipped both trials. Investigators found Benefia’s investments benefited PI insiders, not the insurer, resulting in over PLN 260 million in total losses but only PLN 4 million in assets secured. The Polish Financial Supervision Authority fined Benefia PLN 1.1 million for failing to ensure safe investment practices.
