Healthcare funding gap
Poland's chronic underinvestment in healthcare may be contributing to more than 10,000 avoidable deaths each year, according to experts cited in a new report highlighting the economic and human cost of insufficient health spending. The analysis argues that limited funding has led to longer waiting times, delayed diagnoses and reduced access to specialist treatment, particularly for cardiovascular disease and cancer, where early intervention is critical.
Researchers warn that improving healthcare spending should be viewed as an economic investment rather than simply a budget expense, noting that a healthier population boosts workforce participation, productivity and long-term economic growth. Despite steady increases in healthcare funding over the past decade, Poland continues to spend significantly less on health as a share of GDP than many Western European countries. Experts say closing this gap could save thousands of lives annually while reducing the broader economic burden created by preventable illness and premature deaths.
