Hong Kong Becomes Home to First-Ever Global Mediation Organization

The International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), the world’s first intergovernmental legal body focused solely on resolving international disputes through mediation, was officially established on May 30 in Hong Kong, where it will be headquartered. The signing ceremony for the IOMed Convention was attended by senior representatives from over 80 countries and 20 international organizations, including the United Nations. Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, was the first to sign the Convention on behalf of China, joined on-site by 33 other founding members.
In his speech, Wang emphasized the organization’s role in advancing international rule of law and praised Hong Kong as a model of peaceful dispute resolution. Chief Executive John Lee highlighted Hong Kong’s unique status under the “one country, two systems” principle and its bilingual common law system, calling the city a “super connector” amid global tensions.
