Housing Loan Sales Surge by Over 300% in February 2024
Data from the Credit Information Bureau (BIK) reveals a remarkable surge in housing loan sales, with a year-on-year increase of 305.1% to PLN 9.09 billion in February 2024. The number of housing loans granted also saw a substantial rise, up by 220.8% to 21.8 thousand in volume terms.
For the January-February period, housing loan figures continued their upward trajectory, with a 259.3% year-on-year increase in the number of loans granted and a 351.5% surge in value, amounting to PLN 19.37 billion.
Waldemar Rogowski, chief analyst of the BIK Group, attributes the surge in sales to improved creditworthiness, driven by real wage increases and extended loan periods. The average housing loan amount has reached a historically high level of PLN 417.69 thousand, marking a 26.3% increase from the previous year.
Despite the overall positive trend, Rogowski highlights concerns regarding the quality of loans indexed and denominated in Swiss francs, citing legal risks associated with ongoing court proceedings. However, the overall portfolio quality has shown improvement, with the Home Loan Portfolio Quality Index decreasing by (-0.08 percentage points) over the last 12 months.
