The Silesian regional government and Katowice authorities have initiated steps to acquire a majority stake in GTL, the operator of Katowice Airport, from Węglokoks SA, which currently holds 42.5% of shares. The proposed acquisition aims to secure regional interests and strengthen the airport’s strategic role. Under the plan, the Silesian government would acquire 62% of Węglokoks’s shares, with Katowice taking the remaining 38%. Local officials emphasized the importance of public ownership to ensure the airport's development, avoiding commercial entities motivated solely by dividends.

Katowice Airport, a major regional hub, served a record 6.39 million passengers in 2024. Plans for a €1.5 billion infrastructure expansion by 2032 include a new terminal capable of handling 10 million passengers annually.
