Katowice will benefit from Warsaw’s ESA tech center
Although the European Space Agency’s new technology center will be located in Warsaw, Poland’s government wants the space sector to develop across multiple regions. PFR Group companies, led by BGK, will create a PLN 500 mln investment fund and provide financing for local space infrastructure. This could support plans to transform Katowice’s closing Wujek mine into a Space Technology Center and a Space Settlement Simulation Center. The underground site could host research on isolation, life-support systems, robotics, resource management, hydroponics, and microgravity.
The project also proposes satellite laboratories, a technology park, and retraining former miners as laboratory technicians, robot operators, and space infrastructure specialists. Regional officials are calling for a rapid feasibility study.
