Kozienice and Polaniec power plants reduce energy production due to low water levels
Low river levels caused by the heat wave are forcing Poland’s largest power plants to reduce electricity generation, while planned maintenance has further constrained supply. Enea has limited output at its Połaniec and Kozienice plants because low water levels in the Vistula are disrupting open-cycle cooling systems. Hydrological problems have removed about 2,000 MW of capacity from the two plants. Additional capacity is unavailable because major units at Kozienice and Bełchatów are undergoing scheduled maintenance, while a unit at Warsaw’s Siekierki combined heat and power plant is being repaired.
Facing the risk of insufficient reserve capacity, grid operator PSE activated the capacity market for August 4 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., requiring contracted providers to supply power or reduce consumption.
