Kremlin Plans Massive Military Show of Force

Russia and Belarus are preparing for the Zapad-2025 military drills in September, which many observers see as a display of power by the Kremlin. According to Gazeta Wyborcza, beyond routine manoeuvres, there are concerns that the exercise may include a simulated nuclear strike.
Analysts warn Moscow could present advanced weapons such as the “Oresznik” hypersonic missile and the “Buriewiestnik” nuclear-powered cruise missile. While official figures suggest around 13,000 troops will participate, Ukrainian intelligence and Western experts estimate the real number could reach 150,000, similar to Zapad-2021.
The drills may also test NATO’s and the international community’s response to limited aggression, particularly near the Baltic borders. Observers believe the exercises are designed less for defence than for intimidation of neighbouring states and to reinforce Russia’s image of military readiness.
Although Moscow insists Zapad-2025 is not directed against any specific country, the timing, scale, and assets involved suggest otherwise. The manoeuvres are widely interpreted as a political message – an attempt to demonstrate strength at a time of ongoing confrontation with the West.
