Athletes Avoid Politics but See Its Influence in Sports

Olympic champion Iga Baumgart-Witan believes that athletes rarely discuss their political views to avoid imposing opinions and being judged through that lens. While most try to keep politics out of sports, she acknowledges that politics and sports often intersect, with politicians joining sports organizations while Olympic champions struggle to find roles despite their expertise.

“In my view, sports are somewhat apolitical. We athletes have our opinions, but we generally don’t express them publicly. Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know, but we prefer not to impose our views. When I compete, politics is completely irrelevant,” Baumgart-Witan said.

She avoids commenting on Poland’s political landscape and debates over sports governance, including President Andrzej Duda’s potential membership in the International Olympic Committee, leaving such judgments to others.
