The Maritime Office in Gdynia has announced a tender for the final segment of the waterway to the port of Elbląg, completing the route through the Vistula Spit. This 900-meter section, initially excluded from the "Waterway from the Vistula Lagoon to the Gdańsk Bay" program, is now covered by the government after the 2023 elections.
The project includes deepening the river to 5 meters, reinforcing banks, and building a 160-meter turning basin. The Ministry of Infrastructure supports the final phase to boost Elbląg's port capacity. Work began in 2024 but faced criticism from the Supreme Audit Office, citing mismanagement and unauthorized spending. Investigations into potential misconduct are ongoing.
