Mayor of Zakopane wants areas of city without short-term rentals
Zakopane Mayor Łukasz Filipowicz supports giving Polish municipalities greater power to regulate short-term rentals without eliminating the business altogether. He argues that cities should be able to establish zones where platforms such as Airbnb are banned, particularly in residential areas affected by disruptive tourist behavior. Such restrictions should require approval from municipal councils and public consultation rather than unilateral decisions by mayors. Filipowicz also supports a carefully designed role for housing associations in approving short-term rentals.
Zakopane currently has nearly 50,000 registered tourist beds, with several thousand added in recent years. He expects a planned central accommodation registry to improve oversight and reduce unregistered rentals while protecting residents’ quality of life.
