Min of Energy: MARIA reactor back in operation

Poland’s MARIA research nuclear reactor is resuming full operations, Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka announced on August 5, 2025. Within hours, the reactor in Świerk will reach full power and is expected to operate for another 20 years, supporting scientific research and medical applications, particularly the production of radioisotopes. A modernization program is planned to extend its capabilities.
The Polish Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) granted an indefinite license for MARIA’s operation on July 31, under strict monitoring conditions. The reactor had been offline since April 2025 after its previous 10‑year license expired in March. Acting NCBJ director Prof. Agnieszka Pollo emphasized MARIA’s importance for materials physics, nuclear research, and interdisciplinary studies, highlighting its key role in advancing Poland’s scientific and medical infrastructure.
