Nuclear project gains partner
Bechtel, the general contractor for Poland’s first nuclear power plant and part of the US-based Bechtel–Westinghouse consortium, has signed a contract with Polish construction firm Doraco to support the next phases of geological and geotechnical research for the project.
The agreement was announced in Gdańsk during the “Atomowe Szanse” conference organised by Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, the project’s main investor. Doraco was selected through a competitive tender evaluating technical capabilities, experience and price under a Best Value model.
Geological surveys are essential to designing the plant and its infrastructure. The first phase, completed last year, involved deep testing in the planned nuclear island area. Upcoming work will examine land for auxiliary buildings as well as offshore zones needed for the Marine Offloading Facility.
Doraco will prepare site infrastructure rather than conduct drilling, including offices, utilities, access roads and 13 drilling platforms. Around 1,000 drillholes are planned, with work starting in May and running until the second quarter of 2027.
