Orlen expands Poland’s largest gas storage facility
Orlen has completed a PLN 580 million expansion of the Wierzchowice underground gas storage facility in Lower Silesia, strengthening Poland’s energy reserves ahead of winter. Capacity at the country’s largest site has risen from 1.3 billion to 2.1 billion cubic metres. The investment lifts Poland’s gas storage capacity by almost 25% to approximately 4.1 billion cubic metres, according to the Ministry of Energy.
The additional space provides a larger buffer against supply disruptions and seasonal demand spikes, a strategic priority amid uncertainty in international energy markets. The government ultimately wants national storage capacity to reach five billion cubic metres. The Wierzchowice project also complements Poland’s liquefied natural gas infrastructure and cross-border connections. While greater storage does not eliminate exposure to international gas prices, it gives the country more flexibility in managing consumption, imports and interruptions during periods of high demand.
