Inflation in the European Union increased to 5.3 percent in December 2021. Poland with a price increase rate of 8 percent ranks third in terms of the height of the indicator.
According to Eurostat, the countries with the lowest inflation are Malta (2.6 percent), Portugal (2.8 percent), and Finland (3.2 percent). The highest HICP index (because that is what the EU uses) is in Estonia (12 percent), Lithuania (10.7 percent), and Poland (8 percent).
HICP inflation is the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices, i.e. the harmonized index of consumer prices, calculated based on a unified methodology by the Member States of the European Union.
A detailed Eurostat survey shows that in December, similarly to previous months, energy prices rose the most. In the euro area, they were 25.9 percent higher than the year before. And they contribute the most to inflation, almost 2.5 percentage points. This means that they are responsible for up to half of the indicator.
