Poland records largest EU population decline

Poland experienced the largest population decline in the EU last year, according to Eurostat. Data shows Poland's population decreased by 132.8 thousand in 2023, the highest decline among EU nations. Comparatively, Greece saw a decrease of 16.8 thousand, and Hungary 15.1 thousand.
However, overall EU population increased for the second consecutive year, rising from 447.6 million in January 2023 to 449.2 million in January 2024. This growth was driven by positive net migration, offsetting negative natural increase due to more deaths than births.
Eurostat attributes the population increase to heightened migration post-Covid-19 and the influx of displaced individuals from Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion.
