According to a positive finding from the Ember report, Poland's energy sector set records for renewable energy production and saw a significant decline in coal's importance in 2023. However, there is another side to the coin. Poland is still heavily reliant on coal.

The share of coal in the energy mix in Poland is now higher than in China, which is considered the world's biggest polluter. In China, coal accounts for 60 percent of the mix. In Poland, it is 61 percent.

Moreover, Poland is also the most coal-dependent country in the EU. The Czechs are in second place, with coal accounting for "only" 40 percent of their mix. So the difference is significant. However, plans to phase out coal are in place – albeit long-term, as they extend to 2049. And, importantly, they are still in force.
