Poland spends billions on European satellites
Poland has joined the European Union’s IRIS² secure satellite communications program, committing nearly EUR 600 million from its National Recovery Plan. Poland’s contribution is expected to represent about 10% of the constellation’s total value, making it one of the project’s leading participants.
IRIS² will comprise nearly 300 satellites in low and medium Earth orbit, providing secure, resilient communications for governments, the military, businesses, and EU citizens. The system will use advanced technologies, including quantum encryption, to reduce dependence on non-European infrastructure.
Initial capabilities are expected in 2029, with the full system scheduled for completion in 2031–2032. Poland will also host communications infrastructure and could become a regional hub serving Nordic and Baltic countries. The project may create opportunities for around 400 Polish space-sector companies.
