Poland will apply for tens of billions of euros from EU SAFE program
Poland is preparing to submit its request for nearly €44 billion from the EU’s new SAFE defence-loan programme before the end-November deadline. On 26 November the government will authorise the defence minister to file the application, which will fund projects such as air and missile defence, artillery systems, ammunition, drones, cyber-capabilities, military mobility and protection of critical infrastructure. SAFE offers long-term, VAT-exempt loans with a 45-year repayment period, and Poland is the program’s largest beneficiary.
At the same meeting, the government is expected to choose a supplier for new submarines under the long-delayed Orka program. Warsaw also plans to seek SAFE funding for a national telecommunications satellite, though projects must involve EU partners and meet strict European-content requirements.
