Polish emigration trend begins to reverse
Poland is experiencing a notable reversal in long-term migration patterns as more Poles return home after years spent working and living elsewhere in Europe. Improving economic conditions, stronger wages and a narrowing standard-of-living gap with Western European economies are making Poland increasingly attractive to people who previously viewed emigration as the better financial option.
The change is particularly significant because outward migration shaped Poland’s labor market for nearly two decades following EU accession. Returning workers can provide the economy with skills, savings and professional experience acquired abroad, while also helping alleviate labor shortages caused by demographic decline. Germany and the UK have traditionally been among the principal destinations for Polish emigrants, but slower economic growth and higher living costs abroad are changing the calculation for some families. The trend could have increasingly important consequences for Poland’s workforce and consumer market.
