During the extended May holiday in Poland, renewable energy sources generated over 380,021 MWh of solar and 260,221 MWh of wind energy. However, much of this green energy was wasted because energy demand was low during the holiday period. As a result, the Polish power grid operator ordered the shutdown of photovoltaic and wind energy installations, causing significant energy losses. On May 1, 17,898 MWh of solar and 8,429 MWh of wind energy went unused.
This trend continued on May 2 and persisted through May 3-5, resulting in further losses of 22,676 MWH of solar and 2,037 MWh of wind energy. Euros Energy estimates nearly 319.6 GWh of energy has been lost since early 2024 due to these shutdowns.
