Poland aims to sign as many defense contracts as possible before May 30 under the EU’s SAFE program, which could provide the country with around EUR 43.7 bln in preferential loans. More than PLN 180 bln is expected to go to Polish defense companies, with about 89% allocated to domestic manufacturers by 2030.

The program supports joint European arms procurement and defense-industrial cooperation, but until the end of May countries can still secure financing for national-only purchases if projects are later opened to international partners. Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa is currently negotiating dozens of contracts, including for Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles, anti-drone systems, radars, and artillery equipment.

Officials say SAFE could strengthen both Poland’s military security and the export potential of its defense industry. The European Commission also sees the program as a way to improve cooperation and production capacity across Europe’s fragmented defense sector.
