U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) officials involved in investigations targeting U.S. citizens and allies, particularly Israel. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans against ICC personnel and their families.
This action follows the ICC's issuance of arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, alleging war crimes in Gaza. Both the U.S. and Israel are not ICC members and do not recognize its jurisdiction.
The ICC condemned the sanctions, asserting they undermine its independent judicial work and pledging to continue providing justice to victims of atrocities worldwide. The court called on its member states and civil society to support its mission.
The European Union also expressed regret over the U.S. decision, emphasizing the ICC's role in upholding international criminal justice and the fight against impunity.
