Trump Weighs Easing Russian Investment Fund Sanctions
US President Donald Trump’s administration is considering removing sanctions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), according to a New York Times report cited by Polish media. The fund, headed by Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, has reportedly requested relief as part of talks involving potential shipments of Russian diesel to the United States. An unnamed US official described the proposal as a possible means of improving bilateral relations while pursuing an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. No decision to lift sanctions has formally been announced.
The fund was sanctioned by Washington following Russia’s full scale invasion in 2022, while the European Union imposed restrictions in 2025. Reports also describe discussions about Russian energy assets, gas projects in Alaska and possible commercial deals involving US investors. Any change in sanctions could carry implications for energy markets and international financial relationships.
