Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum, affecting EU exports, including 3.82 million tons of steel sent to the U.S. in 2024. Despite this, Polska Żegluga Morska (PŻM) remains optimistic about maintaining shipments, given its niche fleet and alternative supply routes, such as China.
Steel producers, like Cognor, fear U.S. investment in domestic steel production, driven by cheap energy and gas, will outcompete European firms. Aluminum industry leaders warn that the trade war will have no winners, expecting retaliatory EU tariffs. Polish steel exports to the U.S. grew by 372% but remain small. Experts predict excess steel in Europe, leading to dumping risks and a potential crisis for EU steelmakers.
