Ukrainian Culture Suffers as U.S. Aid Halts

Russia’s aggression has devastated Ukraine’s cultural sector, destroying numerous cultural sites and halting the work of many institutions. Financial support has drastically declined, and the suspension of U.S. aid further exacerbates the crisis. Europe’s assistance through programs like Creative Europe, Erasmus+, and heritage preservation initiatives is now crucial.
Since February 24, 2022, UNESCO has confirmed the destruction of 485 cultural sites, including 149 sacred buildings, 249 historic or artistic structures, 33 museums, 33 monuments, 18 libraries, one archive, and two archaeological sites. As local funding collapses, Ukrainian artists urgently need sustainable support solutions.
“It’s the first time European institutions have created a dedicated space for Ukrainian citizens, emphasizing that Ukraine is Europe, and Europe is Ukraine. Ukrainians bravely defend not only their sovereignty but also the values we all share that underpin the European Union,” Pina Picerno, Vice President of the European Parliament, said.
