Vigo Photonics is ending its HyperPIC project to develop photonic integrated circuits for mid-infrared applications and will terminate its funding agreement with Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development. The company is giving up more than PLN 440 mln in grants, saying the support does not justify the project’s investment needs and technological and market risks. Initial plans required more than PLN 150 mln of the company’s own funds for research and development. Vigo could not secure acceptable joint-venture terms with an international partner, amid changing economic conditions and semiconductor investment priorities.

The company will continue developing the technology independently and seek more flexible grants. It says ending the agreement will not hurt its finances because it received no advances or reimbursements.
