AI-Generated Fake News May Influence Polish Election

As Poland approaches the presidential runoff, supporters of both candidates – Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki – warn of potential disinformation campaigns using artificial intelligence. Each side accuses the other of preparing last-minute fake news to sway voters.
Róża Thun of Trzecia Droga claims PiS may target Trzaskowski with AI-generated content, while PiS MP Jan Warzecha alleges Civic Platform is plotting a similar attack against Nawrocki.
The fears echo a recent case in Slovakia, where deepfake audio falsely implicating opposition leader Michal Šimečka in election fraud circulated just before the 2023 vote, contributing to his defeat.
“We must remember that the line between truth and falsehood is increasingly blurred. Voters should not rely solely on what they see online. It’s essential to wait for confirmation from trusted sources,” Jakub Śliż, president of the Pravda Association, stressed caution:
Experts warn that realistic synthetic media pose a growing threat to democratic integrity and call for media literacy and rapid fact-checking ahead of the election silence.
