Banks earn more on green debt than on fossil fuel debt
Global banks have earned slightly more from arranging climate-related financing than from handling debt for fossil fuel companies for the fifth consecutive year. Since the start of 2026, climate finance generated about $3 bln in fees, compared with $2.9 bln from bond and loan deals for oil, gas, and coal producers. The gap is narrow, underscoring the continued strength of traditional energy. BloombergNEF data also show low-carbon infrastructure spending reached 97% of fossil fuel investment in 2025, but analysts say the ratio must rise to 4:1 by 2030 to meet climate goals.
Regional results vary: the ratio was 2.5:1 in Europe, 1.6:1 in China, and 0.5:1 in North America.
