Chinese trucks frightening European truck manufacturers
Chinese truck makers are entering Europe with well-equipped vehicles priced far below established competitors, prompting concern among European manufacturers. More than 300 of the 1,500 exhibitors at Hanover’s IAA Transportation show were from China. Chinese brands are targeting electric trucks, local production, charging infrastructure and service networks, which remain a key challenge. BYD unveiled a 44-ton electric tractor with a 600-kilometer range and plans eventual European truck production. China accounted for over 90% of global electric medium and heavy truck sales in the first half of 2026.
Analysts estimate Chinese makers have a 30% to 40% cost advantage. Industry representatives warn that repair networks alone will not protect Europe and call for an EU response.
