Coal energy plants require extensive maintenance
Poland is unlikely to face a coal shortage this winter, provided weather conditions are not severe, according to the head of grid operator PSE. A mild, wet and windy winter could raise renewable generation and reduce coal use, while power plants have inventories or contracted deliveries. However, coal is expected to be more expensive and increasingly imported. The greater risk to electricity supply is the deteriorating reliability of coal-fired units built in the 1970s, many of which require maintenance.
At the same time, gas-fired projects scheduled for completion this year in Ostrołęka, Grudziądz and Adamów have been delayed. PSE does not expect rolling outages or mandatory consumption restrictions, and says summer has posed a bigger grid challenge than winter.
