Cost of raising a child in Poland getting higher
The cost of raising one child in Poland in 2022 (until the child reaches 18 and as of the end of the previous year) rose by 4.3 percent to PLN 265,000, while for two children it amounted to PLN 439,000, according to estimates by the Adam Smith Center.
For the same basket of expenses per child, which in 2020 amounted to PLN 254,000, in 2021 would have to pay PLN 280,000. However, families on average did not increase spending to this level. The increase in spending to PLN 265,000 in 2021 represents a real decline in child-rearing purchases.
"The price of the basket of expenditures per child increased in 2021 by 10.3 percent y/y, and only by April 2022 increased further by +7.1 percent compared to December 2021," the release reads.
80 percent of all child-rearing costs are food, housing, transportation and communications, and education. The cost of raising children is relatively high, ranging from 15-30 percent of a family's budget. These costs fluctuate within this range depending on the number of children, their age, and stage of education.
