Deloitte: smog costs Poland PLN 111 bln annually

Every year, the EU pays about 2.9 percent of the GDP generated on its territory for the negative effects of smog and in the case of Poland the sum amounts to PLN 111 billion, Deloitte said in a report. A shift to circular economy would be the only way to stop the adverse environmental changes on Earth, the company’s experts argue in the study.
According to reports from international institutions, smog contributes to the premature death of every tenth man on Earth. In Europe, this means over 400,000 deaths annually, while in Poland the figure stands at approximately 46,000. Apart from negatively impacting human health, contaminated air also reduces productivity. The European Commission estimates that the total external costs related to smog’s impact on health will in 2020 reach from €243 billion to €775 billion.
