Energy giants warn Europe about LNG gas supplies and sustainable development rules
ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy, two of the largest LNG suppliers to Europe, are warning they may curtail deliveries unless the EU significantly softens its sustainability rules. The disputed directives require companies to address human rights and environmental risks across supply chains and expose them to financial liability for damage even outside Europe. Exxon CEO Darren Woods said Europe could start losing supplies from 2027, as foreign suppliers won't be able to meet EU reporting standards, and called the policy "catastrophic" in its current form.
Qatar's energy minister Saad al-Kaabi explicitly threatened to halt LNG shipments. US firms account for roughly 50% of EU LNG imports, Qatar for about 13%. Exxon also challenged EU emission-limit rules in July.
