Energy prices jump on Hormuz risks
Oil and European natural gas prices rose sharply on September 8 as markets reacted to concerns over further disruption to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude for November delivery traded at $98.08 a barrel, up 1.11 percent, while WTI gained 2.16 percent to $93.46. European gas prices approached €74 per MWh, increasing pressure on energy-intensive industries and household costs.
Investors were also watching bond yields, which remained elevated and pointed to persistently expensive financing conditions. Markets are waiting for details of an Iran-Oman agreement concerning shipping arrangements through Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. The renewed rise in oil and gas prices adds another risk to the inflation outlook and could complicate expectations for future interest-rate cuts in Europe, while raising costs for Polish companies exposed to imported fuels and energy in the months ahead.
