Poland prepares major highway upgrades as congestion grows
Poland’s increasingly congested highways need expansion. Work is beginning on a 92-kilometer stretch of the A2 between Warsaw and Łódź, where adding a lane will cost PLN 1.3 bln and take about two years. Drivers will face a 70 km/h speed limit and average-speed enforcement, although two lanes in each direction are expected to remain open. The A4 between Katowice and Kraków is set to become toll-free for passenger cars in March 2027, which could increase traffic.
A broader A4 expansion may cost as much as PLN 10 bln. Preparations are also underway to expand the A1, but its construction schedule and cost have not been announced.
